New Initiative Card Template

Hello everyone! So long no see!

Some days ago I received a request by user ks about how to create new Initiative cards for an expansion set that was currently being developed.

The base game came with 5 Initiative cards and I have never thought about the possibility of needing more.

I happened to have some user generated content from I don't remember where or when in which I had 10 Initiative cards. Those cards used a different font than the one used in the base game.

I thought it would be a fantastic way to write once more in this blog if I could create a new template for Initiative cards so... Here you got: Initiative cards template.

You can also find them in the Downloads section of the blog.

I have used those original 10 Initiative cards to get the background for the template. If you happen to be or know who the creator of this 10 fan cards is, please tell me so I can let the world know.

The fonts used in the base board game for the Initiative cards were "Alchemy Gold A24" or "Alchemy Gold B18" depending on the number.

Here you can find 15 already made Initiative cards.

I hope you find them useful.

P.D.: If you are developing some content for these awesome game, do not hesitate to tell me so I can create an article linking to it.

New Dice Comparator

Hi everyone!

I have just changed the design of this blog: I have moved the posts' tags and the archive to the bottom of the page so I can change the blog design to one column.

I have made those changes because I wanted to add a new page to this blog. I believe this page will be very useful for everyone who wants to know if a certain weapon or spell they are creating is overpowered.

I have created a dice combinations comparator!

As you may know, the base game comes with the following type of dice:

  • 2 yellow dice showing 0 and 1 faces
  • 2 orange dice showing 1 and 2 faces
  • 1 red die showing 0, 1, 2 and 3 faces
  • 1 blue (or purple) die showing 2 or 3 faces

All weapons, spells or monsters from the base game and its expansion sets use these dice to decide how many Hit Points of damage they do.

When you are designing a new card, you often ask yourself if the dice combinationyou pretend to use will not be too much overpowered for the level you have chosen for that item. Sometimes you want to compare certain dice combinations to see which one is more convenient to that new item. Sometimes you just want to know how much powerful is a certain type of monster.

Now you can know in a few clicks.

Comparision between 2 orange dice and 1 yellow die plus 1 blue die.

This dice comparator contains three differenciated sections:

  1. Color picker:: Here you can choose which color will be used for the next dice combination added to the graph on the right side.
  2. Dice combination picker: Here you will find listed all the possible dice combinations ordered by damage capacity. You can add or remove dice combinations from the graph on the right side.
  3. The graph: Here you can find the probabilities of each dice combination in its chosen color. In its vertical axis you can see the propability for each result from 0 to 1 (100%); in its horizontal axis you can see all possible results (from 0 to 12 at most).

I hope you like it and you find it usefull for your new creations.

The next change to be implemented in this blog will be a new page which shows a table with all cards from this game so you can order them by level, power, attack type, etc.

Thanks once more for reading this blog.

Kathra - Hero card

Hi everyone,

Today I present you Kathra's Hero card. Kathra is the new Hero for my expansion pack Glistening Forge, a dwarf female paladin.

Hero cards are a short reminder of every Hero abilities for the players as normally the Hero board contains few words.

This type of card is also used as a reminder for new actions available to all Heroes, as in the case of the action Charge from the expansion pack Forbidden Forest.

In the specific case of Kathra's, this card is a reminder of Kathra being:

  • an expert on inspiring other Heroes and herself thanks to her devotion.
  • as able as Jozan or Orwick to Heal Hit Points.
  • as able as Jozan to use Spells, although she still can not resurrect Heroes.

To create this card, the Charge reminder card, from the expansion pack Forbidden Forest, was used as example. This card, as an exception to the rest of reminder cards, has a clearer background free of shadows. This template is the same size of other card templates.

The symbol of Moradin, the Dwarven god has been used for Kathra Hero symbol as she is one of his Shields. This symbol has also been used as Fallen Hero Token in case she falls during combat, as you can see:

Here you can find the link to download the Hero card template: Download

Please use them for your own creations for this game.

Thank you once more for still reading this blog.

Hi everyone,

A reader of this blog, Eveliuz, has asked me to do a step by step video tutorial on how to create new cards for Dungeons & Dragons: The Fantasy Adventure.

This video has all the steps writen in its footer. I am sorry they are only in Spanish but I think you will understand everything without reading them anyway. This video has no sound. I recomend you to watch it on full screen as it is a screencast.

This video is not complete but covers the main steps to create a card.

If you don't understand a step, don't hesitate to ask me in the comments section.

How-to guide to create new cards

Hi everyone,

As some readers have asked for it, here you got a how-to guide to create your own cards. Here I will tell you how I have created the cards for Glistening forge. Moreover, I have uploaded some base files to help you create Artifact, Monster, PotionSpellWeapon and Booby Trap cards. I am still restoring the Trap cards from the original board game so you will have to wait to see them.

This article will be updated with your doubts / requests so, if you have something to say, comment on!

What do I need?

  1. Paint.net : I create all my cards using this program. It is completely free and you can add plugins to it to enhance its potencial. As far as I know, it is only available for Windows O.S. If someone needs these files in some other format, just tell me and I will do my best.
  2. Vitriol text font: This font is used to create the cards' title (size 27 and bold).
  3. Celestia Antiqua text font: Most of the itallic texts you see in a card are made with this font (size 27 and using bold and itallic).
  4. Celestia Antiqua-SemiBold text font: From the same text font familly than Celestia Antiqua, it is used for the rest of texts you see in the cards (size 27).
  5. Base files: ArtifactMonsterPotionSpell, Weapon and Booby Trap.

Where do I start?

  1. Install Paint.net in your computer and familiarize yourself with its user interface. If you have already used GIMP or PhotoShop, its user interface will look like theirs.
  2. Open one of the basic files I have given you, for example, the Potion base file. You will see that at the right side of the user interface some layers have appeared some of them with a checkbox checked. These checkbox makes those layers visible or invisible. Some of those layers have text writen in english and others in spanish. Some of them contain only images. Depending of the card type, you will find more or less layers.
  3. The first one of those layers is called "Recursos" (Resources). There you will find all the dice and common symbols I have used for my cards. You can copy and paste them whenever you need them in order to create your cards.

And this is all for the moment. If you have doubts or requests about posible further explanations, do not hesitate to comment on and I will do my best to answer as quickly as posible.
